Master's Thesis

30 credits

Mathematics is a lively science where knowledge is created continuously for its own sake or for applications in which mathematics provides languages and tools for explanation and calculation in an efficient manner. The creative side of mathematics emerges particularly clearly in the thesis work being an independent project aimed to deepen knowledge, understanding and skills in the subject. The thesis work is also an exercise in communicating the obtained results both in writing and orally, which is central to a future profession. This thesis on the candidate level, which usually is the first major independent work a student meets, is a summary of previous studies and an introduction to research in pure or applied mathematics. This thesis at the Master level deepens knowledge from the candidate level by having closer links to research and to set higher standards for mathematical proof in the direction of pure mathematics and higher standards on mathematical modeling in the direction of Applied mathematics.
